Veteran Nollywood actor and producer, Kanayo O. Kanayo, has voiced his concerns about the current state of the Nigerian film industry, particularly with the influx of aspiring actresses he believes are compromising its quality.
Speaking during an appearance on the Honest Brunch podcast, Kanayo did not hold back in addressing what he sees as the declining professionalism among newcomers.
“The truth is, many of these young actresses cannot read their lines or deliver their roles with the depth that aligns with the script’s themes,” he stated.
“It’s as if they believe their physical appearance alone will carry them through. This isn’t what acting is about.”
Kanayo highlighted the over-reliance on cosmetic enhancements and artificial accents by some aspiring actresses, suggesting that their focus on physical appearance often outweighs their dedication to developing the craft of acting.
“They come into the industry flaunting curvaceous figures, often enhanced by procedures, thinking that’s all they need to succeed,” he said, adding that such priorities undermine the hard work and discipline required to build a solid career in Nollywood.
Having spent decades in the industry, Kanayo’s remarks reflect a growing frustration among seasoned actors who have witnessed Nollywood evolve from a talent-driven industry to one that increasingly prioritizes image over skill.
He encouraged aspiring actors to focus on honing their talents rather than succumbing to superficial trends.
