You can’t be independent and rely on a man for support

Nigerian media personality and host of the Honest Brunch podcast, Nedu Wazobia has caused a stir on the internet with his recent remarks about women who identify as independent while engaging in casual relationships and dating multiple partners.

During an episode of the podcast, Nedu, alongside other panellists, voiced his views on what he sees as a contradiction in the way some women define independence.

Nedu expressed his opinion that some women take pride in labeling themselves as independent, even when their actions suggest otherwise.

He pointed out that while these women engage in casual relationships and rely on multiple partners for support, they still hold onto the notion of being self-sufficient.

“Some women are out here dating multiple men, enjoying the benefits, and still want to claim they’re independent,” Nedu remarked, adding that this creates a blurred line between those who genuinely work hard to support their own lifestyles and those who rely on men for financial or emotional assistance.

In a tone of both critique and understanding, Nedu further acknowledged that, while these women may enjoy the company and support of men, their actions sometimes overshadow their claims of independence.

He explained, “You can’t say you’re independent and still be relying on a man to support your lifestyle.

The true independent women out the ones are working hard, paying their own bills, and taking care of themselves.”

However, Nedu was quick to distinguish between these women and those who truly uphold their integrity.

He commended women who maintain their standards without compromising their values for a man’s attention or financial backing.

“I have mad respect for women who stay true to their standards, no matter the financial incentives,” he said.

He even shared a personal experience to illustrate his point, recalling a woman who refused to accept any form of financial assistance from men, despite being offered lavish gifts and support.
