Bawumia’s prompt concession reflects dedication to national peace

Security analyst Dr Asante Otchere has remarked that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s decision to concede defeat to John Mahama ahead of the official electoral declaration would not have altered the results of the 2024 presidential election.

Speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight with Alfred Ocansey, Dr Otchere highlighted that both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had their own data and projections.

He argued that even if Dr Bawumia had delayed his concession, it would not have changed the outcome.

“The same way the NPP had their data and numbers, the NDC also had theirs.

Even if Dr. Bawumia had not conceded early, it wouldn’t have changed the fact that he lost to the president-elect, John Mahama,” Dr. Otchere explained.

Acknowledging the emotional toll of election defeats, he stated: “It’s not easy to enter an election with such confidence and bravado, only to end in such an abysmal manner.

Conceding is often about pride rather than the available data. He could have delayed, but that wouldn’t have changed anything because the NDC, I’m reliably informed, completed their collation almost instantly.”

Dr. Bawumia himself addressed his supporters on December 26, explaining the rationale behind his prompt concession.

At his residence, the NPP flagbearer stressed that his decision was grounded in a commitment to preserving Ghana’s democratic values and ensuring national peace.

“The stability of Ghana must always come first,” he stated, emphasizing his dedication to the country’s well-being.

Dr. Bawumia also expressed gratitude to his supporters for their tireless efforts throughout the campaign, reaffirming his appreciation for their loyalty and dedication.
