Development economist Dr. Michael Ayamga Adongo has proposed a bureau of property tax separate from GRA to focus on property taxes.
According to him, 10% of the property taxes taken must go back to the MMDAs.
He noted that over the years, MMDAs have been ineffective at monitoring and collecting property taxes.
However, with the establishment of a bureau of property tax, bureau would give clearance for properties to be connected to electricity and water. To contribute to compliance.
Making this proposal known in a post shared via social media, Dr Michael Ayamga Adongo said “We need to create a bureau of property tax separate from GRA to focus on property taxes. 10% goes to back to the MMDAs. The MMDAs have been ineffective at monitoring and collecting property taxes.
The bureau would give clearance for properties to be connected to electricity and water. To contribute to compliance. Even at 0.4% a property valued at GHS 500,000 would yield GHS 2000 in tax revenue. Those with fixed monthly can arrange to pay monthly deducted at source. Apart from the revenue this huge operation would create hundreds of thousands of jobs”.
