Why conceding early was the best decision for Ghana

Vice President of Ghana and Flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 election, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has provided reasons why he decided to concede defeat even before the Electoral Commission will declare the results of the elections.

According to him, the narrative that was being pushed by the opposition was that the governing political party was trying to rig the elections.

Therefore, it was imperative that after their data had pointed out to him that he had lost the election, the best he could have done was to concede in order to calm nerves and tempers and to ensure the peace and tranquillity in the country is maintained.

To him, the country’s peace surmounts everything else, and conceding early in the election was the best for the country as any form of violence could affect investor confidence in the West African country.

“Ghana needs peace so even though the electoral commission had not yet pronounced… Some of my people in my team were saying you can’t go out to concede; we don’t know if all this data is right let’s wait and all of that. I said, Look, we know this data is right from our system.

If you wait, you’ll build up more tension and violence could come because people will think we are trying to rig the election because that is the message that is coming. They said but nobody has conceded an election without the EC coming out to pronounce and I said there is a first time for everything,” he told some party folks who visited him at his residence.
