Delta LG chairman cancels payment of ‘Christmas levy’, gets accolades from traders

The chairman of the Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State,  Augustine Ogedegbe, has received accolades a for cancelling the yearly Christmas level usually tasked traders in the area.

Traders in the LGA usually tasked between N5,000 and N10,000 to sell the wares during the Yuletide period.

However, in a swift move on Wednesday, December 15, Ogedegbe announced the cancellation of the levy.

He said that the cancellation of such levy is in line with the MORE Agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration.

According to the chairman, this cancellation would ease the economic burden on traders who are already struggling with the reality of the national economic reforms.

“Traders at the market had been paying market levy, environmental levy, and other levies to some women, and none of the money was coming to the government,” Ogedegbe explained.

He also stated that from January, officials from Ethiope East would take over the management of the market.

Reacting to the action by the chairman, the traders said this is a welcome respite for the people.
