The Police Should Change Their Motto

Glenn Samm, one of the Democracy Hub protesters arrested earlier this year, has criticized the Ghana Police Service, suggesting that they should reconsider their motto, “Service with Integrity,” as their actions do not align with this statement.

In an interview on TV3’s The Day Show with Bella Mundi, Glenn Samm, who was arrested during a demonstration against the government’s handling of illegal mining (galamsey), expressed dissatisfaction with how he and other protesters were treated while in police custody.

According to Samm, the police service would benefit from a change in leadership, advocating for the appointment of a new Inspector General of Police (IGP) to replace the current IGP, Akuffo-Dampare.

“They blindly follow orders from above, even if it goes against their better judgment,” he said during the interview.

This came after the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protests, where demonstrators, including Samm, were arrested following a three-day protest at the 37 Military Roundabout in Accra.

The protest was organized to address concerns over illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) and economic mismanagement.

On Sunday, September 22, 2024, tensions escalated during the second day of the protest, leading to a confrontation between protesters and the Ghana Police Service.

Following the unrest, the arrested protesters were remanded into custody by the Accra Circuit Court.

They faced five charges: conspiracy to commit a crime, unlawful assembly, causing unlawful damage, offensive conduct, breach of public peace, and assault on public officers.
