Ending Bawku confict a major priority—Mahama

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has tabled the conflict in Bawku as one of his main focus when he assumes power on January 7, 2025.

He is of the view that a volatile Bawku spells doom for the people of Ghana considering its proximity to terrorist activities.

John Draani Maham intends to make the feeding parties understand the need for peace in Bawku and the fact that no one benefits from protracted conflicts.

Addressing the media at his office, the president-elect stated “Bawku is going to be one of the major issues we confront. We had managed to maintain the peace until this government came, and some security lapses led to what has happened. So one of the things we are going to do is to look at that as quickly as possible.

Luckily, this morning I got my first security briefing, and you can be sure that Bawku was one of the issues that came up, so it is something we are going to tackle and look at how we can calm the issues. Bawku is particularly sensitive because of the external terrorist threats because when you look at the theatre where this terrorist threat is taking place, it is just across our border from Bawku. If there will be any likely incursion, the unstable nature in the Bawku area will create grounds for penetration.

As quickly as possible, we must try and resolve the issue in Bawku and I do think that it is something that we can get the understanding of the two groups to realize that we are all one people and we must learn to live together in peace. Nobody benefits from conflict; I mean Maprusi businesses have been affected, Kusal businesses have also been affected. People want peace so that they can go about their businesses”.
