An Ex-convict, Akwasi Opoku alias Indomie has been jailed for a total of 21 years in hard labour for stealing slippers among other criminal acts at Techimantia in the Ahafo Region.
Akwasi Opoku pleaded guilty to stealing 25 pairs of male slippers valued at GHc3,750, 7 pairs of female sandals valued at GHc630 and 2 pairs of children’s sandals valued at GHC100 admitted the offence in his caution statement.
The Duayaw Nkwanta Circuit Court presided over by Akosua Asantewaa Sarpong Esq, handed down the 8-year jail term to the suspect who had gained notoriety for criminal acts in the area.
The court also found the suspect guilty of assault, threat of death and illegal possession of a weapon and jailed him for 13 years in total.
According to the facts of the case as presented to the court by Detective Chief Inspector Mawuli Owusu-Agbe, the accused who is unemployed and another on the run at about 1:30 pm on November 11, 2024, ambushed the victim with a shotgun and a cutlass.
The convict informed her that he was contracted to kill her and corked the gun but it did not fire.
The complainant begged the accused to spare her life but he ignored her plea and when he realized the gun could not fire, decided to use a cutlass he was holding at the time to whip the complainant in the process.
She screamed for help out of pain and some farmers who were returning from their farms rushed to the rescue of the victim.
The accused sensing danger, abandoned the gun and cutlass, ran away and went into hiding. A witness in the case picked up the gun and the cutlass and accompanied the victim to the Police station to lodge a report. The accused person was later arrested from his hideout and in the course of investigation, he admitted the offence and stated that he did so because he was intoxicated.
