The Federal Capital Territory command of the Nigeria Police have been warned against harassing motorists using tinted car windows.
The warning to the police came from the House of Representatives on Tuesday, December 10.
According to the House, the harassment and impounding of vehicles solely for the violation of tinted glasses and covered plate numbers should be halted.
The House also mandated the FCT police to issue a notice announcing a period of grace, not less than 90 days, to allow motorists the time to comply with the regulations.
The decision of the lawmakers followed the adoption of a motion tabled by Muktar Shagaya on the floor of the plenary on Tuesday.
Shagaya in his motion said the enforcement of the ban on tinted glasses and covered plate numbers by the FCT police lacked sufficient time for motorists to comply with the guidelines.
Calling for respect of citizens’ rights, the House adopted the motion and directed the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to launch a comprehensive public enlightenment campaign.
The campaign will focus on informing citizens about the specifics of the regulations and the procedures for obtaining necessary permits or making required modifications to their vehicles.
The motion as adopted by the Green Chamber was further referred to the House Committee on Police Affairs and Legislative Compliance for compliance.
