Jubilant NDC Supporters Pull Down Akufo-Addo’s Statue After 2024 Election Victory

Nana Akufo-Addo’s controversial statue has been removed and thrown away by jubilant supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following their resounding victory in the 2024 general elections.

The statue, which once stood outside the Effia Nkwanta Hospital in Sekondi, was toppled amidst celebratory fervour, sparking intense public debate about its symbolism and the deeper frustrations it represents.

Images of the dismantled statue, lying abandoned on the ground, surfaced online on November 7, 2024, drawing mixed reactions from Ghanaians.

For many NDC supporters, the act was a symbolic rejection of Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration and its policies, seen as having failed to address the everyday struggles of the populace.

The statue was initially unveiled as a tribute to Akufo-Addo’s development initiatives, with Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah describing it as “a testament to the president’s visionary leadership.”

However, its placement outside a hospital plagued by inadequate facilities and surrounded by poor road infrastructure had made it a target of criticism long before its removal.

Many residents viewed it as a tone-deaf symbol of “self-glorification” at odds with the region’s pressing needs.

“This statue was an insult to us,” a Sekondi resident remarked. “How do you celebrate a leader with such grandeur when basic necessities like proper healthcare and good roads are lacking? Its removal is justice for the people.”
