The Police Should Be Here, Not the Military

Reports indicate that supporters of the incumbent MP, Lydia Alhassan, and aspirant MP for the NDC, John Dumelo, clashed on the University of Ghana campus during the ongoing elections.

According to Citi News, Lydia Alhassan’s supporters were allegedly distributing money to voters at the UG Campus polling station. The situation escalated when John Dumelo’s supporters confronted Alhassan’s camp after discovering that someone had filmed the alleged exchange of funds.

This led to a chaotic confrontation, drawing the attention of the military, who arrived in pick-up trucks to restore order. However, the intervention of the military sparked further tension, as some of John Dumelo’s supporters expressed their displeasure, claiming that the military’s presence was intended to intimidate them.

One of the angry supporters of John Dumelo spoke to a Citi FM reporter, saying, “Can’t I use my phone in public anymore? I haven’t invaded anyone’s privacy. They hit the man for filming in a public space.”

Another supporter added, “We received information that money was being distributed inside. That’s why the person who filmed it went there.

“We don’t know why the military is here, and we don’t understand their role. The only security personnel who should be here are the police. Why are we seeing the military, and why are they preventing us from recording footage of money being given to voters?”
