Lawyer Kwame Jantuah has raised concerns about the tendency of presidential leaders in Ghana to avoid collaboration with past presidents who are in opposition once they come into power.
During an interview with Naa Ashokor on TV3’s Ghana Decides show, Lawyer Jantuah emphasized the importance of unity between current and former presidents for the greater good of the country.
He pointed out that while some leaders have made efforts to engage with past presidents, such cooperation is often lacking.
“When we have a president in power, they don’t tend to work with past presidents in opposition to any significant degree. Nana Addo made an effort to change this early in his tenure when he called former presidents to the Flagstaff House for discussions,” Jantuah said.
He argued that collaboration between current and former presidents is particularly crucial during national crises.
He specifically referenced the ongoing galamsey (illegal mining) issue, which he described as a national emergency that no single political party, be it the NDC or the NPP, could solve alone.
Jantuah suggested that the current President should have included former President John Mahama, traditional leaders, and independent bodies in discussions to find a lasting solution to the galamsey menace.
Jantuah also expressed concern over the continued destruction of water bodies and forest reserves by illegal miners, criticizing the Mineral Commission for its lack of action.
He lamented that while these environmental issues persist, there has been insufficient effort to enforce regulations and protect the country’s natural resources.
