Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, has called for collective efforts to ensure a successful Road Safety awareness campaign aimed at reducing carnage on the roads in the country.
The President made this call during the launch of the partnership between the Football Association and the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), held at the GFA Headquarters, on Wednesday December 4, 2024.
He expressed his delight about the partnership and emphasised the importance of collective effort, especially from football clubs, to ensure the campaign’s success.
“I’m extremely happy that finally, we have arrived here today. I think this partnership is mutually beneficial. It concerns everybody here and beyond. It concerns everybody in the football ecosystem and beyond. It concerns every member of our family and beyond. And it’s the reason why all of us must pay attention to what is happening today. We must leave this venue as proud ambassadors of the road safety campaign especially during this time that we are heading into national elections, where you expect some of us to be happy, and you expect some of us to be sad,” President Simeon-Okraku said.
“On both fronts, emotions will come out and that may result in varied levels of challenges, including accidents, sometimes. So taking as much information as you can from this program today and going out to preach the gospel is our collective responsibility. If we do that, a life or two could potentially be saved. When we know that it is impossible to bring back a dead colleague, then we would appreciate the gift of being alive: For this reason, we must leave no stone unturned in ensuring that until the Almighty God himself takes us away, we shouldn’t die through road accidents.”
The President urged the Clubs to embrace the Road Safety campaign as the surest way to avoid accidents and save lives.
“My call to all of us in the football ecosystem is that we use our football vehicle to the best of our ability and show our colleagues from the Road Safety Authority that football can make a change in whatever they are doing.”
“I know our clubs are watching, they’ll be watching, they’ll be listening, and I’ll entreat all our officers in all our 10 football regions to pick up the campaign and to also preach the gospel. Our media officers in all our 48 Division One League clubs, 18 Premier League clubs and 20 Women Premier League clubs would also pick up this campaign. And this will send a message very deep across the country.”
“This is the commitment of football to keep each one of us alive. On that note, I thank all of you for coming. I would encourage all of us to stay together on this journey. I also want to thank the GFA Foundation for this initiative. I think that it’s a very good one. All of us are involved, and together we will stay alive.’ he concluded.
The GFA-NRSA Road Safety Awareness Campaign is a collaborative initiative between the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) aimed at raising awareness about road safety in Ghana.
Through the power of football, the campaign seeks to reduce road traffic accidents and its related fatalities and injuries in Ghana targeting young people who are mostly at risk of road accidents and also consumers of football.
The GFA has put all its football products and its related platforms, channels and logistics at the disposal of the National Road Safety Authority to use for effective road safety education and awareness for the greater good of the Ghanaian people.
