Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has openly criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for its handling of the power crisis that plagued Ghana, a period widely known as “dumsor” for its frequent and unpredictable power outages.
The NPP stalwart contended that despite the solid foundations laid by previous administrations, especially under President John Agyekum Kufuor, the NDC failed to manage the energy sector and instead allowed the country’s power grid to destabilize, impacting both businesses and households.
In an interview on Angel FM about Ghana’s power challenges, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu didn’t mince words, calling out the NDC’s role in the crisis.
Reflecting on the history of the power sector, he pointed out the stark contrast between the achievements of the Kufuor-led government and the mismanagement he believes occurred during the NDC’s tenure.
“Given the foundation laid by President Kufuor, there was absolutely no justification for the NDC to lead Ghana into the power turmoil we witnessed,” he lamented. His statement resonated with many Ghanaians who endured the years of persistent power shortages that disrupted daily life and business activities.
Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu also voiced his frustration with individuals who downplay Kufuor’s contributions to the energy sector.
He specifically addressed the claims made by some critics who have accused the former president of doing little to address the country’s power challenges.
“Some people dare to claim that Kufuor did nothing for the power sector, yet they are the same ones who point fingers at him for the dumsor crisis,” he said. He was particularly firm in his assertion that such accusations were not only inaccurate but also part of a broader effort to rewrite Ghana’s history for political gain.
The former Majority Leader went on to underscore that the NPP administration has been unwavering in its commitment to improving the power sector over the years.
Despite the challenges that remain, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu firmly believes that the progress made under Kufuor’s leadership should not be undermined.
“Our government laid the foundation for the energy sector’s growth, and the work done by Kufuor is still visible today,” he emphasized.
