As the 2024 elections approach, constituents in the Sagnarigu District of the Northern Region are making their voices heard.
During a dialogue session organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), residents raised pressing concerns across various sectors, calling on parliamentary candidates to articulate clear and actionable plans.
The discussion, structured around key sectors, highlighted the concerns of the people and sought detailed responses from candidates regarding their vision for development in the district.
Economic Revitalization
Economic hardships have become a significant concern in Sagnarigu, with micro-businesses collapsing and livelihoods dwindling. Constituents asked candidates to outline strategies to revive these small enterprises and improve the viability of economic sub-sectors within the municipality. They emphasized the urgent need for innovative policies to sustain livelihoods and create opportunities.
Agriculture Development
Agriculture, the backbone of many livelihoods in the region, has been struggling. Constituents pointed out the loss of farmland to human settlement and sought plans to make agriculture appealing to the youth. They also highlighted the persistent difficulty in accessing government-subsidized fertilizers and called for solutions to ensure farmers benefit from this policy. Additionally, they urged candidates to address the lack of agricultural extension officers and veterinary services, both of which are critical to improving crop and livestock productivity.
Infrastructure and Road Networks
The poor state of road networks in Sagnarigu is a pressing issue. Constituents emphasized how deteriorating roads hinder the movement of goods and people, adversely affecting the district’s economy. They also raised concerns about inadequate drainage systems, which exacerbate flooding during rainy seasons, causing damage to lives and property. Candidates were asked to propose concrete measures to improve infrastructure and mitigate these challenges.
Education Sector Challenges
Education is another area of significant concern. Constituents highlighted the lack of access to basic learning materials, poor performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), and limited opportunities for ICT learning. Moreover, they raised the issue of high costs associated with secondary and tertiary education, which often burden parents and prevent many youths from continuing their education. Candidates were urged to propose actionable plans to address these issues and improve education outcomes in the district.
The dialogue was a charged yet hopeful exchange, with residents urging candidates to focus on real, practical solutions.
