My sons support rival teams, but we’re united

In an interview on Kumasi-based Kessben FM monitored by MyNewsGh.com, National Security Minister Albert Kan Dapaah has called on Ghanaians to embrace peace and tolerance.

The National Security Minister highlighted the importance of unity in navigating the country’s democratic process, using a relatable personal story to drive home his message.

“Democracy thrives on differences, but these differences must never lead to division,” Kan Dapaah remarked, his tone reflective yet resolute.

Stressing the virtues of tolerance and understanding, he appealed to Ghanaians to prioritize relationships over political affiliations, a sentiment he illustrated with a story from his own family.

“In my home, we have always been ardent supporters of Kumasi Asante Kotoko,” he shared, a hint of nostalgia in his voice.

“But one day, to my surprise, my two sons decided to support Accra Hearts of Oak. Can you imagine the betrayal I felt?” he added with a laugh, lightening the mood.

Despite the intense rivalry between the two football clubs, Kan Dapaah explained that it never affected the bond within his family.

“They remain my sons, and we live together harmoniously because love and unity come first.”

This anecdote resonated with many listeners, providing a relatable analogy for how Ghanaians should approach political differences.

“If I can love my sons despite their support for a rival club, why should politics divide us as citizens of the same nation?” he asked, his question both rhetorical and poignant.

Kan Dapaah also emphasized that elections are not a battleground but a process to determine the country’s leadership in a fair and peaceful manner.

“Politics is not war. We are one people with one goal—to see Ghana prosper,” he said, urging individuals to avoid actions or rhetoric that could incite violence.

His message comes at a critical time when political tensions are high, and emotions often run deep in the lead-up to elections.

Ghana, however, has a reputation for being one of Africa’s most stable democracies, a status Kan Dapaah is determined to preserve.

“Our democracy has been a shining example on the continent. It is up to us to ensure it remains that way by embracing peace, even in the face of political disagreements,” he stated.
