Segun Sowunmi Reveals Atiku’s Stance

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has revealed that former Vice President and ex-presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has not disclosed any intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking during an interview with News Central TV, Sowunmi emphasised the PDP’s commitment to structured primaries, distinguishing it from rival parties.

“The PDP is a very interesting and structured party. We don’t ‘dash’ people the presidential ticket or any other ticket. Every PDP ticket, from councillor to governor to president, requires a primary contest,” he stated.

Sowunmi, who previously served as a spokesman for Atiku’s presidential campaign, highlighted the need for the PDP to focus on rebuilding its internal structures before discussing future elections.

“I have insisted that it’s too early for the PDP to be talking about the presidential election in 2027. Why? Because we need to fix the vehicle that will carry everybody there; otherwise, what’s the point?” he said.

Addressing speculations about Atiku’s potential candidacy, Sowunmi clarified, “In any case, Atiku has not told anybody in clear terms that he’s going to run. I have asked him twice, with months in between, and he hasn’t confirmed anything.”

Sowunmi’s remarks underline the PDP’s emphasis on process and preparedness as it navigates its future electoral strategies.
