Five Confirmed Dead, One Missing in Boat Mishap in Delta State

At least five people, including that of a one-year-old child, have been confirmed dead following a boat accident which occurred near Benneth Island in the Warri Southwest council area of Delta State.

The incident happened on Friday when a speedboat carrying passengers returning from a burial ceremony in Gbaramatu Kingdom collided with a submerged log, throwing many on board into the water.

According to reports, the accident occurred due to the speedboat’s high speed and the lack of life jackets for passengers. Many of those on board were unable to swim, leaving them vulnerable in the water.

A statement from the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) confirmed the casualties, saying, “Five found dead, six persons injured and still receiving treatment, nineteen persons rescued, one still missing.”
