The Member of Parliament(MP) for the Tolon constituency who doubles as the First Deputy Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, Alhaji Habib Iddrisu has called on the speaker of Parliament the Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin to be an impartial speaker devoid of partisan affiliations.
“ We all respect the speaker and he wouldn’t have been speaker if some of our members did not vote for him to become the speaker because they believed in him and thought he has something in him to be a speaker for Ghana.” He said.
He noted that even though the speaker is an NDC member, he should be impartial in view of the position he holds
“ He has been an NDC member of parliament for 28 years but we expect that the institution that he leads should make him impartial with regard to his dealings and the work he has to do in parliament.” He urged
Speaking on Diamond radio in Tamale, the Tolon MP said all the 138 NPP members of parliament are in the country and are ready for parliamentary business whenever the speaker is ready.
“ If he so wishes to reconvene parliament, we the NPP are ready to do parliamentary business.”He disclosed
Responding to the issue of the minority refusal to come to parliament, he indicated that the NPP has the numbers to do parliamentary business and that should the minority refuse to come to parliament they can still conduct parliamentary business.
“ We have the numbers and so if they refuse to come to parliament that’s their problem .” He argued
Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament, Alban S.K. Bagbin, has declined the call by the majority to recall parliament.
In his response to a request, he said “As we approach the December 7th presidential and parliamentary elections, the Parliament of Ghana will, as usual, take into account the intensity of general election activities in our work. I firmly believe that this period presents citizens with a unique opportunity to hold their government and MPs accountable.”
“Therefore, the Parliament of Ghana will reconvene and tackle the nation’s pressing issues after the election.”
