IWEN Ghana congratulates the Commonwealth’s new Secretary-General

The Indigenous Women Empowerment Network (IWEN Ghana) has sent a congratulatory message to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, on her historic election as the new Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.

It said, “This milestone achievement marks a significant moment for Ghana and the Commonwealth, as Madam Ayorkor Botchwey becomes the first Ghanaian to assume this esteemed leadership position”.

The congratulatory message endorsed by the Executive Director IWEN Ghana, Celestina Maame Esi Andoh, praised the election of the Minister of Foreign Affairs as a testament to her exemplary leadership, diplomacy, and commitment to advancing global cooperation.

“Her election as the Commonwealth Secretary-General is not only a victory for Ghana but also for African leadership.

We believe that her tenure will inspire transformational change across the 56-member Commonwealth nations,” the congratulatory message stated.

IWEN Ghana further expressed confidence that Madam Ayorkor Botchwey’s extensive experience in foreign relations, gender advocacy, and international development will position her to address key issues such as gender inequality, youth development, and sustainable growth within the Commonwealth community, including Ghana.

“Her deep understanding of these challenges aligns with our organisation’s mission of empowering marginalised communities, particularly indigenous women,” the message added.

As an organisation committed to advancing the rights of women and marginalised groups, IWEN Ghana pledged its readiness to collaborate with the Commonwealth under the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration’s leadership.

“We look forward to a future where women’s voices are amplified, gender equality is prioritised, and sustainable development goals are advanced across Commonwealth nations,” the message said.

IWEN Ghana also extended its gratitude to the government and people of Ghana for supporting Madam Ayorkor Botchwey’s candidacy and demonstrating the country’s commitment to promoting peace, unity, and cooperation on the global stage.

IWEN Ghana also indicated that “We believe Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey’s leadership will usher in a new era of opportunity and inclusion within the Commonwealth community”.

IWEN Ghana is a non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering indigenous women and marginalised communities in Ghana.

Through advocacy, education, and capacity-building initiatives, the organisation promotes gender equality, economic opportunities, and environmental sustainability across the country.
