What happened with Matheus Nunes? Nightclub incident in Madrid

Manchester City’s midfielder, Matheus Nunes, has made headlines for all the wrong reasons after a night out in Madrid took an unexpected turn.

On Sunday, September 8, Nunes was arrested in the early hours at La Riviera nightclub, accused of stealing a man’s mobile phone after an awkward encounter in the bathroom.

The Portuguese footballer, who was enjoying a weekend break with friends due to the international break, found himself in trouble with the law when a 58-year-old man claimed Nunes had taken his phone.

The man reportedly attempted to snap a photo of the City star without permission while he was in the bathroom — an act that didn’t sit well with Nunes.

Snap and snatch: What really happened with Matheus Nunes?

Witnesses in the nightclub shared that the alleged victim tried to take the picture in a private moment, which understandably frustrated Nunes. According to reports, the 26-year-old grabbed the phone and refused to return it, saying he wouldn’t give it back after having his privacy violated.

Another version of events suggests the man may have touched Nunes while holding the phone, sparking a defensive reaction from the player, who believed a photo had been taken. Either way, the police were called to the scene and found Nunes in possession of the phone.

What followed was a dramatic turn of events as Nunes reportedly displayed a “defiant” attitude towards the police. The footballer was taken to the Arganzuela police station, where he was questioned before being released on bail later that day.

His lawyer acted quickly to secure his release, and the player avoided a court appearance as the incident was classified as a minor theft.

Despite the nightclub drama, Nunes was back on the pitch for City’s 2-1 win over Brentford on September 14, coming on as a second-half substitute. City fans will be hoping that this off-field incident doesn’t disrupt his focus as the season progresses.
